Batsu: Improv Comedy Show

Playing on culture to crack a painfully funny comedy brand

Batsu needed to draw Americans into a completely foreign brand of comedy—a painfully funny show based on a peculiar Japanese strain of punishment humor. 214 designed an inviting visual identity that speaks across cultures, playing up the irreverence of the performance.

Japanese-Inspired Simplicity

The Batsu logo was inspired by the simplicity of the Japanese flag, but with a comedic twist. The paintball splatter hints at the irreverent, interactive spirit of the show, while specifically referencing Batsu’s (literally meaning “punishment”) humiliation-oriented game show heritage.

Punishment Never Looked So Good

The “Choose Your Punishment” graphic showcases a unique element of the Batsu experience. It recalls the Japanese game show influence and engages the audience even before the show (and hilarity) ensues.

This unique, pixelated halftone photography style serves double duty—it offers a stylized grittiness and budget-friendly collateral for low resolution images.
